MISSION

To provide meaningful, high-level rugby league experiences for all of New Zealand’s tertiary student players by operating a framework that supports national representation and academic advancement.

OBJECTIVES

• The promotion of rugby league and tertiary education at regional, national and international levels

• The development of strong links to tertiary institutions and their student’s alumni and networks

• The promotion of tertiary education as a pathway to success for rugby league players of all genders (encouraging our young people to remain active and participate in sport at a representative level)

• The promotion of any initiative that facilitates academic success in members of the rugby league community

• Fielding representative teams that compete with distinction

WHAT WE DO

Every year, coordinated by NZUTSRL, New Zealand’s top university and tertiary student-athletes come together to represent their institutions, communities, and country on the rugby league field. These aren’t just games— they are milestones of opportunity, growth, and connection for men and women. Every other year, these teams will look to travel internationally, to proudly wear the black jersey and represent New Zealand on the international stage. We also maintain connection with current and past players through an active alumni network. This creates a community that is fostered during tertiary education and lasts a lifetime. This places further emphasis on having an educational and cultural focus, and in future we hope to grow these opportunities through events, workshops and school visits.

WHY THIS MATTERS

PATHWAYS & OPPORTUNITY

We provide student-athletes with a unique pathway to pursue high-level rugby league while continuing their tertiary studies. For many, this is the only option to stay in the country and progress in both education and sport, given the low selection opportunities within the Warriors, our only NRL team in New Zealand. This isn’t just rugby league, it’s a stepping stone. When players are at a crucial decision point in their life where their choice today shapes the future of tomorrow. As they decide whether to pursue the glimmer of fame and fortune through a professional rugby league career, or a solid education, we offer the opportunity to chose both. Our players aren’t just chasing NRL dreams. They’re earning qualifications, forming friendships, and becoming part of a national movement. They wear the black jersey with pride, knowing they’ve earned the right to represent their country at this level.

EDUCATION FIRST

We connect players through universities, TAFEs, and academic mentors, encouraging them to stay in study, complete their qualifications, and prepare for life beyond the field. For many of our players, often Māori and Pacific youth from lower socio-economic backgrounds, the pressure to earn money and support whānau is real. Tertiary study can seem like a luxury. But through our fixtures and opportunities to represent New Zealand, education becomes a prestige pathway. A real and respected option that still holds the door open to rugby league success.

KEEPING TALENT IN AOTEAROA

Too often, our most promising players feel they must go overseas to chase professional aspirations. Our program offers them a chance to grow their careers and education right here at home. The lure of professional leagues overseas is strong, but it’s not the only path. We show that it’s possible to stay in Aotearoa, pursue higher education, represent your country, and still be scouted for elite opportunities. Our programme helps young athletes dream bigger and smarter.

AMBASSADORS FOR NEW ZEALAND AND THE GROWTH OF RUGBY LEAGUE

Our teams face elite opponents, including police and defence squads and international sides. Our players act as ambassadors for New Zealand’s youth, diversity, and sporting excellence, setting an example for those around them, and those who will follow in their footsteps, learning key life skills along the way. Our opportunities are a key element of rugby league’s growth story in New Zealand. We welcome and develop new talent, giving them an intermediate step to test their skills, earn their place, and grow their confidence. It’s a professional environment that still honours learning, leadership, and community. Representing New Zealand is no small thing. It can be a huge honour, a lifetime achievement and a moment of pride not only for the player, but their entire family and community. Our fixtures provide that opportunity for many who wouldn’t otherwise dream of this becoming a reality.

Beyond the game, we create a safe, supportive community where players feel seen, valued, and empowered to open up about studying, wellbeing, and life’s challenges. This is a place where rugby league becomes a bridge, not a barrier, to future success. Many of our student-athletes are the first in their whānau to enter higher education. Being part of the NZ Universities Rugby League community provides not just support on the field, but a safe, familiar space to ask questions, find help, and navigate the world of tertiary education life. We develop more than just athletes. Our environment fosters future coaches, referees, physios, and other roles, ensuring that young people can stay connected to the sport they love, even if they’re not on the field. It’s about building a full ecosystem of leadership and opportunity.
