Pakuranga Croquet Club

Welcome to Pakuranga Croquet Club

We welcome anyone who would like to play croquet whether they be absolute beginners or experienced players.

Croquet is a game for anyone of any age; individuals, couples or families, interested in participating in a challenging and intriguing  sport that provides both physical and mental exercise in a friendly social atmosphere.

Croquet requires strategy, judgement and skill rather than strength or fast reflexes. It has been likened to chess on grass. It is ideal for players of all ages whether male or female. Advanced members take it very seriously but most Club members see it as a relaxing and friendly way to exercise and socialise. A handicapping system ensures that players of all abilities have a good chance of winning games. Coaching is available for those who are interested.

At Pakuranga Croquet Club we play a version of the game called Golf Croquet. Other versions are Association Croquet, Riccochet, Garden Croquet, Gateball, etc.   Golf Croquet is the most popular version in New Zealand and worldwide.

We play on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings starting at 08.50am, and on Friday mornings starting at 10.00am. Generally on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays we play 3 games with a break for morning tea after the second game, and on Fridays play 2 games. Each game takes around 50 minutes. During daylight saving times we play social "twilight" games on a Thursday starting at 4pm followed by a barbeque.

All you need initially are flat soled shoes and casual dress. Mallets are available to borrow. Your first three visits to the Club will be at no cost to give you time to properly experience the game. After that, all going well, you will be invited to join the Club.

Pakuranga Croquet Club is a very friendly and active club with around 65 members.  The current Club officers are;

  • President, Harley Gray  (021 650 543)
  • Club Captain, Cheryl Winsor  (ph 09 535 2036  mob  027 277 740)
  • Secretary, Lorne Dryburgh  (ph 09 521 5687)

Our Club annual subscriptions are $300 and this gives members unlimited play at the Club and use of the clubroom facilities.  New members pay a joining fee of $30 to cover the  cost of a name badge, game tags and a key. The key gives members access to the lawns out of normal Club hours.  On joining the Club, and after trying out various different mallets to find the type that suits you, you will be expected to buy your own within 3 months of joining.

If you plan to visit it is advisable to phone in to the Clubrooms (021 283 1122) beforehand, and before 08.40am, to check that there will be space on the lawns for you (it is very unlikely that there wouldn’t be).
