OUR
COMMUNITY
POOL

The Taradale Community has fufilled the original mission that began in 2016 and reopened the Green Family Taradale Pool (also referred to as Taradale Community Pool and Greendale Pool) on 1 February 2021.

As of 16 February 2025 we also completed the upgrade of the reticulation and filtration system.

Now our focus has turned to increasing aquatic capability of the local tamariki!

This website contains some base information about our activities and our regular communications is driven through our Facebook Page.

The cause is lead by the Taradale Community Pool Trust established for the purpose of driving the project to reopen the pool and then manage the asset after opening.

The Charitable Trust purpose is:

  1. To develop the business case to reopen the pool subject to MOE approval - DONE in March 2018!
  2. Lead the project to reroof the pool and reopen it for the community - DONE in February 2021!
  3. To be the asset custodian and ensure the benefits of the water safety educational journey of children and access to water sport activities for the wider Taradale Community - our ongoing mission.

Facility operation

The Trust engages a facility manager to deliver the aqautic services to the community.  Dolphin Academy was appointed as the facility manager after a competitive supplier selection process in 2020.  Dolphin Academy manages the delivery of the water safety skills programmes for five local schools, delivers learn to swim classes, hires the pool space to regular hirers like Greendale Swim Club and Westshore Surf Life Saving Club, and provides opportunities for school swim sports, professional development workshops taken by Swimming NZ and NZ Coast guard.  All booking enquiries are to be directed to Dolphin Academy.

The reticulation and filtration system project

The pool had the original reticulation system (circulation pipes) and a filter that matched the turnover rates possible in the system.  These limitations meant that the water turnover and filtration is about a third of what the standards recommend so when there is a serious "code brown" incident the pool needed to close for up to 48 hours!

The Trust was mindful that the aquatic activities delivered to the schools and community must continue with as little disruption as possible so the project work was staged to occur over three summer closure periods.

With the MOE thumbs up the Trust, began the project in December 2022 by enlarging the plant room and buring the balance tank on the edge of the carpark.  The project continued in December 2023 with local company Taylors Pools and Spas completing pool related enabling works including retrofiting the bespoke stainless steel spargeline into the pool ready to be connected in the final phase of the project, and installing an ultraviolet light disinfection system (meaning the chlorine levels were reduced making the pool more comfortable for swimmers and staff).

The summer of 2024/25 the final works were completed.  The new filters were be installed, the pool itself was renovated to install a full length overflow return channel and the new supply sparge line connected.  Together these were connected to the balance tank, and the system now allows greater turnover rates and ensure water quality management is better, much easier, and considerably less disruptive for closure incidents.

Fundraising

The dedicated trustees have done an amazing job securing the funding for the reroof project and the reticulation and filtration system project.  A total of over $2million over five years!

Water safety education support

Our cool little pool is saving lives through educating children in water safety across five schools.  Dolphin Academy does a fantastic job delivering the Water Skills for Life programme and the capability of the children in the participating schools has progressed so much over the years since the pool reopened.  The last two years our Trust has secured grants from the Royston Health Trust to subsidise access to the programmes for the participating schools.

The cost of the lessons is part of the challenge for schools but the other barriers have been cost of transport and time out of the classroom.  The Royston Health Trust grant funding has helped subsidise the costs for the schools by about 1/3 over the two years.
