PORT ALBERT FISHING CLUB INCORPORATED

ANNUAL SEASON CLUB COMPETITION RULES

Dates of Competition

The Port Albert Fishing Club Incorporated Annual Competition current dates are between 1 June 2026 to May 31st 2027 inclusive. Fish must be caught within these dates, and all entries must be submitted no later than 7 June 2027 in order to be eligible for this season.

Eligible species & categories

Snapper, kingfish, kahawai, trevally & gurnard

We will have Junior and Adult categories within these species – prizes and categories are TBC and will be confirmed by the Committee prior to the end of the season.

Fishing Method

All fish entered into this competition must be caught on rod and reel (or handline). No netting or longline fishing is allowed (maximum of 3 hooks per line). Methods such as drone fishing, kite fishing etc., are allowable provided the maximum hook limit is adhered to.

Method of Entry

All fish entered into the competition must be measured on a measuring mat. The type of mat to be used is of the style with an L-shaped plastic end at the start of the measure. We do not mandate the use of specific measuring mats, however if the mat used appears to not conform with specifications of generally used measuring mats, then an entry may be deemed ineligible.

To validate the catch, 3 clear photos of every entered fish are required:

  1. A landscape photo from above (not the front, back or side) showing the full fish on the measuring mat
  2. A close-up picture showing the tail of the fish to confirm length
  3. A picture of the angler holding the fish

Measurements are taken from the tip of the jaw of the fish to the innermost point of the V on the tail of the fish. Measurements will be rounded down to the nearest increment on the measuring mat used, i.e., if the mat is in 0.5cm increments, then a fish measuring between 40cm and 40.5 cm would be counted as 40cm long.

For measurements to be valid, the following must be adhered to:

  1. The fish must be laid flat on its side on the mat, on a flat surface
  2. The jaw of the fish must be touching the raised start of the measure, and must not be distorted so as to exaggerate the length of the fish
  3. The V of the tail should be clearly visible and as close to the centre line of the measure as possible. The tail should sit naturally and not be squeezed together to exaggerate the length of the fish
  4. Fish must be fresh and must not be clearly cut or otherwise mutilated, i.e., photos should be taken prior to gutting and/or gilling the fish.

All photos must be clear to enable the Committee to accurately determine the length of the fish. Blurry, shaded or otherwise compromised photos where accurate lengths are unable be verified may be deemed ineligible for entry.

All entries should be emailed to the Club, with the details of the angler, catch date and the required photos as set out above. Email address for entries is pafishclub@gmail.com

In the event of a tie in length, the tiebreaker used will be the earliest of the catch date of the tied fish. If tied fish are caught on the same date, then the tiebreaker used will the entry time and date.

Spirit of Competition & Rules

As this is a length based, photo submission competition, not every catch is going to be able to be verified in person. Therefore, we stress the importance of adhering to the letter and spirit of the rules and complying with everything set out above

The Committee reserve the right to disqualify any catch at their sole and absolute discretion for any reason whatsoever including, but not limited to, suspected measure tampering and false catch dates being recorded.

Any questions or issues regarding the competition should be directed to one of the members of the Committee, or otherwise sent to our club email address – pafishclub@gmail.com
