PURC Celebrates Major Milestone for Howick Pakuranga Community Sports Centre

Pakuranga United Rugby Club is proud to announce that development of the Howick Pakuranga Community Sports Centre is set to begin on the 4th May 2026, marked by a special Ground Breaking Ceremony 1 May 2026 to celebrate this significant milestone.

This long-anticipated development represents a major step forward in delivering a multi-use community hub for East Auckland, designed to support a wide range of sports, recreation, and wellbeing activities.

PURC Chair Rob Neil says the start of construction is an exciting moment for the community.

“This is a hugely important step in bringing our vision to life. This facility will serve thousands of people across East Auckland and create opportunities for sport, connection, and community for generations to come.”

The centre will expand existing facilities to include additional indoor courts and flexible spaces, helping address the growing demand for indoor sports in the region and ensuring more people have access to quality facilities close to home.

The project has been made possible through the generous support of a wide range of funders and partners. PURC would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank NZ Lotteries, NZCT, Grassroots Trust, Foundation North in addition to the commitment from Auckland Council to get this project off the ground.

PURC also acknowledges the ongoing support of its wider community, stakeholders, and the many sporting codes who will benefit from the expanded facility.

Once completed, the centre will cater to a wide range of sports and community groups, building on its existing role supporting thousands of participants across rugby, netball, badminton, touch, baseball, and more.

In an exciting partnership, The Y, more commonly known as the YMCA, will manage the facility, ensuring strong community connection, accessibility, and professional operation.

“Partnering with The Y ensures this facility will be more than just a sports venue — it will be a vibrant and inclusive space for the whole community,” said Neil.
