AWARDS FOR 2019-20 SEASON


Club Player of the Year for 2019-20 Matt Grant

Morris Yates Memorial Award (for the club member who shows outstanding enthusiasm, loyalty, camaraderie and spirit for the game of cricket on and off the field)

Morris was a club member for over 50 years. He was the epitome of the true club man and his contribution in many facets was outstanding and his death in 2015 has left a large gap in the club. He was elected a Life Member in 1995 and continued making his wonderful contribution right up to his sad passing.

This seasons winner is Daniel Rawson, Captain of the Championship team

Dick Motz Player of the Year Award (winner of the Player of the Year Award determined by points allocated for runs, wickets, catches etc)

Dick Motz joined the club in 1955 and played until 1972, capturing 481 senior wickets at an average of 13.66 and he also scored over 3500 runs. He played for Canterbury from 1957 to 1969 and represented New Zealand from 1959 to 1969.

Dick was a modest, gentle and self-effacing man, who was described in the club’s centenary book as a ``hero for everyman `. He certainly was that for the club members and he was the reason many a schoolboy joined the club in the 1960s and 1970s.

This seasons winner is Matt Grant of the Div. 2 team with 1329 points.

MLC Powell Award (Batsman scoring the highest run aggregate over the season)

Maisie Powell was the sister of three brothers who played for Riccarton (two of the brothers played for Canterbury as well). The Powell family name was synonymous with the club for over sixty years. Maisie Powell was granted Life Membership of the Club in 1963.

This season`s winner with 816 runs is Sunny Singh who plays for the Div.8 Telegu Thunders. Sunny’s tally included two 100`s and five 50`s

Ernest Boulton Memorial Cup (Bowler with the most wickets)

Ernie Boulton joined the club in 1912/13 and took thirty five wickets in First grade cricket that season .He was club captain in 1914/15 and latterly a Vice President. He died in 1948 and this trophy was instituted in his memory.

This season`s winner with 36 wickets is Michael Bramhall who played for the Premiers and Championship teams

Ross Newton Cup (Most outstanding all-rounder)

Ross Newton was an enthusiastic lower grade cricketer and a consistent and regular wicket taker for the teams he played with. This trophy was first instituted in 1973.

Gurinder Nijjar 238 runs, 36 wickets and five catches

This season`s winner is Matt Grant with 509 runs, 34 wickets and 19 catches. Matt plays for the Div.2 team

ER Caygill Award (Most promising u23 years of age batsman)

Ernie Caygill was a member of the Caygill family and a foundation member when the club formed in 1905. He scored over 5000 runs for Riccarton and played for Canterbury. He served the club in various administrative functions for over forty years.

Wayne Motz Trophy (Most promising u23 years of age bowler)

Wayne Motz was the son of Dick Motz, a New Zealand Cricket and Riccarton Cricket Club legend. Wayne was tragically killed in Cathedral Square early one morning going about his work. The ball on the trophy is the ball used in the 1969 Test match against England in which Dick captured his 100th test wicket. Dick was the first New Zealand bowler to take 100 test wickets.

This season`s winner is once again Fraser Campbell from the Premiers team.

John Kiddey Trophy (for the best premier team fielder)

John Kiddey is one of the Living Legends of the Club, Currently Club Patron, he took 922 Premier Grade wickets for the club at an average of 14.93. He later played lower grade cricket for the club and finished his career with over 1100 wickets for the club. He played for Canterbury and should have represented New Zealand on the tour to South Africa in 1961/62. He was made a Life Member of the Club, along with Dick Motz, at the Centenary dinner in 2005 and was selected, along with Dick, as a member of the Best Ever RCC team.

This season`s winner is Amandeep Arora

JB Percival Trophy (for the most wicket keeping dismissals)

Barry Percival was one of the great characters of the Club. He joined in 1948 and played until his sudden death in 1983. He had been the life and soul of the club for any years, with a tremendous enthusiasm for life and a passion for cricket. He loved fielding, had great big hands and could catch anything. He was elected a Life Member of the Club in 1976. His son David played for the club and his grandsons Jared and Adam currently do as well.

Previous winners of this award over the last three seasons include

Brad Gordon, three consecutive seasons with 32, 27 and 27 dismissals respectively

This seasons winner is Conor Fitzgerald from the Championship Team with 24 dismissals (18 catches and 6 stumpings)

Riccarton Cup (team attaining the highest place in grade)

Awarded to the team to finishes in the highest place in their grade over the season.

Last season’s winner was the Telegu Thunders Div.8 team

This seasons winner is the Div.2 team who were first in their two-day competition and second overall in the three game formats

The Stead Family Cup (for the club team displaying the best attitude and club spirit)

The Stead Family are one of the many families who have been longstanding families involved in the Club. David, a Club Legend and member of the Centenary Best ever Riccarton Team as was Gary, the current Black Caps Coach. Wayne also represented Canterbury and Glenys was club treasurer for many years.

This seasons winner is the Div.2 team captained by Matt Grant.

Jack Ackland Memorial Trophy (most valuable player in the club as determined by the President)

Jack Ackland was a former Life Member and Patron of the Club. He joined the club in the 1948/49 season from the West Coast and in his first season took over 50 wickets. He played senior cricket for five years and was a member of the clubs Presidents team for many years. He was a Canterbury Cricket Board member and a match manager for first class matches played at Lancaster Park and QE 11 Park.

This seasons winner with an outstanding contribution to his team and the club is Matt Grant from the Div.2 team

Nancy Northcroft Trophy (Club member of the year)

Nancy was the scorer for the senior team for over 15 seasons and was elected a Life Member of the club in 1971. She was a very accurate, meticulous scorer and a trusted protector of player wallets and valuables. In her work life, she was a well-known town planner. For a generation of Riccarton Cricket Club players, she was wholeheartedly respected and admired.

The Committee have determined that from the 2020 season this trophy will be renamed the Junaid Ismail Trophy in honour of our friend and clubmate Junaid who was tragically taken from his family and friends in the mosque attack of 15 March 2019

This seasons winner is Graeme Gordon, Manager, Mentor and strategist for the Premier team

FF Dawson Shield (Club member who has given fine service over many years)

Fred Dawson was a club member for over fifty years being elected a Life Member and was also President and Patron. He played 145 games for the senior team over 20 seasons and represented Canterbury at First Class level. Fred was also a prominent Canterbury Cricket official.
