Junior Hard Ball Cricket - u10 to u13 (year 4/5 to year 8)

Each summer we enter junior teams in the Auckland Cricket Saturday morning T20 competition, through our affiliation with Hibiscus Coast Cricket. This is a fun competition that helps kids gradually build the skills they need to play full format cricket.

We play in the u10, u 11, u12 and u13 grades, and our teams include kids in years 5 to 8 attending schools (or home school) anywhere from Warkworth to Mangawhai.

Home games are usually held at Metro Park, Millwater (and occasionally at Warkworth or Kaipara Flats). Away games are held at fields around the North Shore, with car pooling encouraged. Games usually start at 830am, and are finished by around 11.30am leaving plenty of time to enjoy your weekend.

Training days are determined by the team coach, and are usually held midweek at Mahurangi College or Kaipara Flats Sports Club. (If your child can’t attend training it’s not necessarily a deal breaker - please get in touch to discuss.)

The competition starts late Oct/early November and runs until late March, with a break over the school holidays (Christmas to late Jan.).

We have extensive team bags kitted out with bats and playing gear, so you don’t need to buy a whole lot of kit to join the team. You’ll just need white cricket pants, an abdominal guard, and enthusiasm to learn and be part of a fun club.

Playing conditions

This is a fun T20 format intended to help kids build their skills and confidence. Each grade has slightly different playing conditions, but as a general guide:

  • Teams are 8-a-side

  • Each grade has a ‘grace period’. This means kids can’t get ‘out’ in their first X deliveries, so they can build confidence in their batting.

  • Each player faces a maximum number of balls before retiring, and bowls at least 2 overs, ensuring everyone gets a turn to bat and bowl.
