Eulogy to Jean Weathers Delivered by June Patchett I first met Jean Weathers in approximately 1979 when she came up to Auckland with Ken Patchett and Bill Picken to play in the New Zealand Championships that wee held in the Waitemata Badminton Hall. Not only were they were there to play but to survey and take a interest in the newly built Waitemata hall as they had in their minds to build a similar hall in Rotorua. A lrge project which others in the Club were going to take up a huge part of their lives over a long period of time. They were Ken Patchett ,Bill Picken ,Ross Allen, Frank Duncan, Jean Weathers and Duncan Murray who were the main core members pushing for this project to go ahead. About this time in the mid1970s the Rotorua Badminton Club had been playing in the Sportsdrome taking up all of the hall with courts and membership increasing. With the hiring of the Sportsdrome if something else came to town the club had to forfeit its playing activities. So the reason was to be independent and have their own facility. Much fundraising was required over a period of years, negotiations with the council to find a site which was satisfactory and when the one in Tarewa Place was decided upon it had to have loads of filling that then had to settle before the building could commence. It took a couple of years before permits were granted and the building was underway, and what a structure it became and still is. A large project by so few. I came to live in Rotorua in 1983 when the Hall was nearing its completion; Jean was at the helm with the Bank Accounts and the Overdrafts. The pressure of seeing to all the outgoing payments. What would we have done with out Jean? I do not know but at the time she had been working and doing the books for an Engineering company although not a qualified accountant she was capable in doing all the relevant business pertaining to the Badminton Club. She negotiated the Loans and repayments at the bank for the Mortgages. Made sure that payment to the construction companies were kept up to date, so much responsibility. Once the Hall was officially opened it was decided to have two Committees for the Club, one was to administer our Club activities and the other was to supervise the management of the Hall.. Jean once more holding the position of treasure up to two years ago, almost 35 years of dedicated service to our Club
