KINGFISHERS

Randwick Rugby League Sports Club Inc

About Us:

The Randwick Rugby League Sports Club is the 2nd longest surviving club affiliated to Wellington Rugby League. We can all stand tall and be proud as we recognise this magnificent achievement - 2020 see's the club celebrate its 90th birthday!!

We must first acknowledge the efforts of everyone who has been a part of the 90 year long journey.  We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our foundation members who way back in 1930, saw the need to establish a 'new' rugby league club, from what can only be described as a very small beginnings based at Randwick School in Moera.

Back then, Moera was a 'village' undergoing a huge transformation into a quickly established community built around the Railway Workshops.  In one of New Zealand's truly last "working class" areas, the platform was set and with the suburb of Moera experiencing a rapid population growth, it also had to provide for the social and sporting needs of the day.

Randwick School officially opened in October 1929 and became the first 'home' of Randwick Rugby League, before it set up base in the 'shack' at Strand Park, only to be lost in the fire of 1982.  That forced a move to Naenae Park where we have been based ever since.

Randwick Rugby League has been synonymous with producing many champion teams and players, and we continue to uphold the values and principles that our forefathers set for us.  To those of you that have served in any capacity within the Kingfisher family, you will know that the path to success must continue and we are duty bound to follow the course that has been charted for us.

Randwick Kiwis:

The club has been blessed with some of NZ's finest players, Jack Hemi, Ron Westerby, John Whittaker (1970-84), Kevin Tamati (83), Barry Edkins (83), Barry Harvey (87-89), Tony Kemp (87), Stephen Kearney (87), Denvour Johnson (93), Sika Manu and Ben Matulino all were Test Players, while George Lajpold (86-87) was a touring player.  Our latest Kiwi Daniel Levi competed for the Kiwis in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

We are also pleased with our Women selected for Kiwi Ferns, Fuarosa Time (2005), Ana Pereira (2008-13), Ake Pereira (2010-13), Bridget Smith (2010-11) and Maryann Colllins (2010-11) & Geneva Webber (2013).

Wellington Premierships

The Club is second only to Petone in the number of Wellington Premierships we have won.  We have won the Wellington premiership in the following years:- 1944, 1946, 1947 (share with Marist), 1956, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2020.

The Club has also appeared in National Club Knock-out Finals, unfortunatley all as runners up 1982 vs Petone, 1983 vs Otahuhu, 1984 vs Mt Albert, 1985 vs Manukau, 1991 vs Northcote

The Randwick Womens team were crowned Wellington Champions in 2009 (against Wainuiomata Lions), having gone through their season undefeated, they continued this throughout the 2010 & 2011 season and won their Grand Final against Te Aroha Eels (2010) & Petone Panthers (2011) to again bring home the Championship trophy.

This club has a very family orientated spirit which is perhaps why they have had success over the years.  With the increase in interest of Rugby League from the mid 80's, the club has enjoyed a healthy Junior section which has seen the club always consistently one of the better performers locally
