How to manage entry of students and teams into school sports competitions.
TeamBuilder is the area of Sporty for creating and managing your school’s teams for competitions. You can access TeamBuilder via the TeamBuilder tile on your Dashboard. If the TeamBuilder tile is greyed out, you do not have the correct login access. Contact support@sportsground.com and we can check what access level you have.
Landing page
Opening TeamBuilder shows a list of all sports and competitions your school’s been invited to, grouped by competition owner - for example, College Sport Auckland, College Sport Wellington, School Sport Canterbury, Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association, or a regional sport like Netball North Harbour.
Additionally, Sporty administrators are able to customise their TeamBuilder view to hide a sport, an organisation, or an individual competition. For example, a school sports coordinator who is only responsible for one sport is able to hide all other sports, so only their relevant one is showing.
1. Click Comps to expand the competitions where you can view:
2. Click the magnifying glass icon to search for the competition by name, sport, or competition owner.
3. Use the "Show" filter to toggle between:
Team building screen
Opening a competition shows every registered player, coach and team admin on the left, and the competition’s grades on the right.
Every school will have a form available to take registrations directly from the student, coach, or team manager.
Team View
Open a team to see its details, its members, and (where applicable) its team access code - used to log into the Match Day Scoring App.
Teams are entered in TeamBuilder - the area of Sporty for creating and managing your school’s teams. You can access TeamBuilder via the TeamBuilder tile on your Dashboard.
To enter a team:
Once a team’s created, you can add its players, coaches and team admin. This may not be required based on the rules set by the competition owner.
If you’re adding a whole roster at once, use the school roll or multi-select methods below. If you’re adding just one or two people, add them manually or drag and drop them in individually. Adding all players, coaches and team managers unlocks extra features in Sporty, including Chat2Teams and match-day team selection.
1. Drag and drop players into a team.
Students and coaches can be dragged and dropped from the participant databases on the left, into a team on the right.
2. Add multiple people to a team quickly.
Sort or filter your database, then add multiple people at once. Tick the checkbox next to the player’s name, then select Move X Players to Team.
Complete the registration form on behalf of the player - use the auto-suggestions to help with manual input. When adding a coach or team admin, change the role field accordingly and type the person’s details.
4. Drag and drop from the school roll.
Drag and drop students from the School Roll into a team, if your school’s connected to KAMAR or Edge. If your school uses a different student management system, contact Sporty Support to get your school roll imported.
Add the Sporty Draws and Results widget to your website, or open the competition owner’s website, to enter results.
Prefer to score from your phone at the game? See the Match Day App section below.
To enter a result:
Make sure to enter a result for all games, even if the other team has already entered a result.
If both schools’ results match, the score will display in green, and no further changes can be made. If they don’t match, the score will display in red as disputed - contact the competing school to resolve it. You can edit results from the Score Game screen.
If your school needs to default a game, open the Score Game screen and change the status to Lose by Default. Make sure you still contact the competing team to let them know you won’t be able to make the game.
To enter your school into individual-based sports like athletics and swimming in TeamBuilder, first select the competition.
Now add students to the team via these options:
When adding a student, you will receive a pop-up requiring additional information as you have not yet set the events that the student will compete in.
Add a team for any relay events your school will be competing in.
Sporty checks eligibility automatically, based on the rules the competition owner sets (age, gender or year level). You don’t need to do anything here unless you see a red warning on a team.
The competition owner decides whether an ineligible student triggers a warning or is blocked from being placed into the team. If dispensation is needed, contact the competition owner. A team with a warning is highlighted in red - open the team and click the exclamation mark to see the warning message.
School Sport eligibility may also apply to top-tier grades. If your school’s roll is imported into Sporty, ‘new to school’ status is calculated automatically. However, you will need to manually update the school roll for any non-domestic students. The quota field shows each student’s status.
A warning can appear for a few different reasons:
Prefer to manage your team and enter results from your phone on match day? Download your College Sport Organisation’s app from the App Store or Google Play.
Log in as a team admin, scorer or player to see upcoming matches.
Chat2Team automatically creates an instant, secure messaging group for every team added in TeamBuilder.
On the day, select your team for the match, track player statistics and substitutions, and enter results live as the game happens.
For more on the Match Day App, see the full user guide here.
Your School Contacts database can be found in your school’s Online Registrations area. This form is used to maintain your list of contacts and is shared with your regional School Sports organisation. Keeping it up to date is your school’s responsibility.
Other schools use this database to contact you about cancellations, defaults or disputed results.
