As far back as the year 2008, two families (The Smiths & Hurunui/Masons) combined too keep the Shannon Junior Rugby U11 team fit & active during the summer months.
Touch Rugby was the medium used to achieve better ball skills, fitness, team work & speed. With all those components in mind the very 1st "Shannon Sidekicks U13" mixed touch team was formed. Registering too compete in the 2008/2009 Highbury Whanau Centre Junior Youth Touch Module. Great hype, coach & player dedication placed us into finals spot for 1st or 2nd, versing the top club "Te Whanau Pa". We were humbled to 2nd place. An awesome placing, especially being a new Club with new players & coaches. Shannon Sidekicks legacy was born and continued to the 3rd year providing 2 teams too compete in the most favoured module comp the HWC manawatu youth module.
As development allows and years of dedication from key whanau continue. In 2011, The "Shannon Touch Rugby Club" was formed too combine "Shannon Sidekicks". Gina and Jemell came on board in 2012 and took the lead on seeking a Grant from NZCT to secure a foundation of equipment, gear and our very own Shannon Junior Touch Unifoms ( still in use today!). This was also the beginning of our Shannon Junior Module, where Teams would come from Levin and Foxton to participate in the Professional Fun Positive & Fair Play environment created by STRC. In 2013 STRC wanted to extend that to Adults of our Rohe, to enjoy the awesome game of Touch in a positive and fun environment. Hence the creation of Shannon Adult Touch Module, running Friday nights. We have had some great success come from Shannon, Each year with the development of both Players and referees we have seen amazing achivements come from the Shannon Modules, with over 40 Juniors being selected to represent Kapiti Horowhenua and 5 Collage aged being chosen for development squads Representing New Zealand
Touch is a fantastic and easy game to play, involving all members of the whanau, what better way to play as a whanau, than touch rugby,
