The coolest thing about BMX isn't the bikes, the racing or the adrenaline....it's the friends you make along the way, the confidence you build, and the skills you develop.

BMX is about having fun, challenging yourself, backing each other and making memories along the way.

If you would like to give it a go, come along on a Monday night at 5.15pm.

If you are new to BMX racing you may be wondering how on earth you get your child into racing.

Here is a brief guide to help you on your way to supporting your budding future Olympian…

To race at the Nationals, a rider needs a full race licence (either a spocket or challenge class licence).

This allows the rider to race away from the Southland track. Or if you have a "Sprocket" rider under 7 years old (UCI age) they can race at any track. Sprokets are also provided with a license plate when they register with BMXNZ.

Island licence (New for 2026 licences onwards replaces regional licence) Riders 8+ yrs (UCI8) holders may participate in NQM, Club and Interclub meetings held within their licenced island. (North Island or South Island).  An Island Licence can be upgraded to a Challenge Licence by submitting the online request and paying the appropriate fee in the current licence year.

So at the start of the year when it comes to licencing, you need to ask yourself, are we going to start competing nationally or are we happy with the club night racing?

Racing away from the track is not for everyone as everyone has their own circumstances but we do encourage those that want to compete, to get into it from an early age.

You must complete 4 NQM's to compete at the Nationals this includes sprockets.

Each year BMXNZ will publish the dates of events from one Nationals meeting through to the next and will state which ones are NQM's.
