The SBS Bank Southland Stags are delighted to announce the re-signing of outside back/midfielder Matt Whaanga for the next two seasons. Whaanga, who is currently signed with the Hurricanes in Super Rugby, had a career-best campaign during the 2022 NPC season and is expected to come back firing and ready to go after the Super Rugby season.

Director of Rugby Matt Saunders expressed his delight at having Whaanga back in the team, saying, "It's great to have Matt back for the next two seasons. He was exceptional for us during the 2022 NPC season, and we're looking forward to him bringing his improved skills and experience back to the team after his time with the Hurricanes."

Whaanga, who is excited to come back to the Stags as an improved player, said, "I am excited to have re-signed with the Stags and look forward to the coming season. There is a good mix of experience and youth in the Stags system at the moment, so hopefully, we can deliver some good results for the province and get the terrace pumping."
