ABOUT RUGBY SOUTHLAND

Rugby Southland has been at the heart of community sport in the deep south of New Zealand since 1887, when it formally separated from the Otago Rugby Union to establish its own provincial identity. Built on a foundation of community passion and rural pride, the union has grown into one of New Zealand’s most enduring rugby organisations. Today, Rugby Southland supports a thriving network of clubs, schools, and development programmes, ensuring the game remains a central part of life across the region.

The Southland Stags, the province’s flagship NPC team, have represented the deep south since the early days of national competition, proudly wearing the 'maroon and gold' at Rugby Park Stadium in Invercargill. Known for their grit, resilience, and loyal fanbase, the Stags have produced many memorable moments and cultivated fierce rivalries - particularly with neighbouring Otago. Their style of play reflects the character of the region: hardworking, uncompromising, and full of heart.

A defining chapter in Southland rugby history is its storied relationship with the Ranfurly Shield, first claimed in 1920 and defended in several iconic eras since. These triumphs remain treasured memories for supporters and a symbol of the province’s competitive spirit. Today, the Southland Stags continue to compete in the NPC and maintain strong ties with the Highlanders Super Rugby franchise, carrying forward a legacy built over more than a century of southern rugby tradition.
