The SBS Bank Southland Stags are thrilled to announce the signings of rising outside back Denzel Samoa and dynamic loose forward Konrad Toleafoa ahead of the 2026 NPC season.

Both players have earned their opportunities through impressive performances  with Moana Pasifika in the early stages of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific campaign and will bring energy, athleticism and hunger to Rugby Southland.

Denzel Samoa – Outside Back

Born and raised in Auckland, Samoa has taken a unique pathway to professional rugby. After spending much of his recent journey playing rugby league in Queensland’s Queensland Cup competition, he made the switch to rugby union in 2025 — immediately turning heads with his natural flair and athleticism.

Encouraged to return to Auckland for a trial opportunity with Moana Pasifika at the end of 2025 — similar to the pathway taken by current Stag Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa — Samoa impressed from the outset. He was subsequently selected as a fulltime member of Moana Pasifika’s wider training group for 2026.

The explosive outside back announced himself in preseason with a standout solo try against the Highlanders and made his Super Rugby debut against the Fiji Drua last week.

Stags Head Coach Scott Eade said Samoa’s growth has been exciting to watch.

“Denzel’s transition from league to union has been outstanding. His athletic ability, work ethic and willingness to learn have seen him make rapid progress. We’re extremely proud of the way he has taken his opportunity with Moana Pasifika and we’re excited about what he’ll bring to Southland in 2026. He’s an X-factor player who can light up a game.”

Konrad Toleafoa – Loose Forward

Toleafoa previously spent time in the Highlanders Under 20 environment while completing his university studies, combining academic ambition with his rugby aspirations.

Over the past two seasons, he has made several NPC appearances and continued to build his game. His recent form during Moana Pasifika’s preseason campaign caught the attention of coaches, earning him a preseason opportunity against the Highlanders.

His development has now been rewarded with a starting debut for Moana Pasifika this weekend against the Hurricanes — a significant milestone in his professional journey.

Eade said Toleafoa’s physicality and work ethic made him an exciting addition.

“Konrad understands what it means to work hard for your opportunity. He’s a tough, abrasive loose forward who brings real physical presence and competitiveness. To see him earn a starting Super Rugby debut is a testament to his attitude and preparation. We’re delighted to secure him for the next two years and look forward to seeing him grow in a Stags jersey.”
