In 1924, the Auckland Rugby Management Committee submitted and passed a scheme whereby when there are more than 9 senior teams, it splits into no less than 2 sections. The split in this first year was determined by the previous years points. Of the teams who played senior rugby the previous year, Eden failed to field a senior team in 1924, however Kings Old Boys did field a senior team and were joined in the B Section by Suburbs, North Shore and Newton. The remaining 6 teams; Marist, Rifles, Grammar, Grafton, Varsity & Ponsonby made up Section A. Suburbs would play 7 seasons in Section B before the club then went on a 5 year stretch during the Great Depression without a Senior team at all. And the club would not play Senior ‘A’ again till mid-way through the 1939 season, when it finally earned the right to play in Division 1 once again.

As it is today with all amateur sports clubs, so it was with Suburbs in the early club days - a never-ending battle against finance. With such a momentous year behind them, a ground, a training shed, and a senior team, the Club statement of accounts showed a credit balance of only 9/- at the start of the 1924 season. Something had to be done. And so the Club's first Queen Carnival was launched in 1925. Indeed it proved such an outstanding success that the Club indulged in the luxury of the installation of electricity (for the cost of 22 pounds) throughout the training shed. Through the 1920s the club continued to grow but club finance was still proving a tough hurdle and club management was faced with a seemingly never-ending struggle.
