The South Waikato Super Sports Trust was initiated by a group of local businessmen to raise funds to assist 2 local athletes attend the Olympics 25+ years ago. In 1984, Councillor Mr Bernie O'Sullivan pledged the council's support to contribute funds to the money the Trust was able to raise. From this time Super Sports and District Council have forged a strong partnership. The trust has continued to raise and in turn grant funds to local sportspeople competing on the international stage. The South Waikato District Council has been our major partner providing continued funding to complement the efforts by hard working committees over the ensuing years.
The Event holds a high profile within the community and is organised and run on a voluntary basis by the Trust committee. Entrants come mainly from within the South Waikato but the last 4-5 years has seen a growing number of out of town entrants.
The Organisational Set-up.
The trust is administered by a committee of 10, who perform all operational activities along with organising the event and any other fund-raising activities. There is an independent board of 4 who along with 2 committee members act as the trustees and determine how funds are awarded among applicants.
