The legacy of Ihaka Takaanini, a respected chief of the South Auckland region inspires the Takaanini Giants American Football Club (TGAFC). He fought bravely for his people, and his son, Te Wirihana, continued his leadership. We honour their legacy and the cultural values they represent. As a club, we stand proud of our heritage and the traditions passed down through generations.

Established during the Matariki (Māori New Year) celebration on June 22, 2022, our club is dedicated to promoting American Football in New Zealand. This sport has been a part of our country since the 1970s, and we aim to support its growth and development.

As a club deeply rooted in the Takaanini community, our mission is to support and nurture local talent, foster community engagement and promote healthy lifestyles through American football. We use the sport as a vessel to improve health and well-being, and our club is driven by a commitment to help our community thrive. We strive to create a positive and inclusive environment where everyone can benefit from the sport and its values. 

Since its inception, the TGAFC have operated a premier senior team for players aged 21 and older. This team has been the foundation of our club, demonstrating competitive spirit and commitment on the field. In response to growing interest and demand, we are excited to expand our offerings for the 2024/25 season

In addition to our senior team, we are introducing two new teams: a Junior team for ages 13 to 16, and a Colts team for ages 17 to 20. This expansion will allow us to support players at various stages of their development, from young newcomers to those preparing for senior-level competition.

Our club proudly supports a diverse range of athletes from the local community, creating a dynamic environment where players of all ages can develop their skills, build teamwork, and enjoy the benefits of American Football. We are committed to nurturing local talent and providing opportunities for our players to excel both on and off the field.
