Tennis in Te Mata was started by the school principal of the time, H. T. Gibson about 1905 and shortly after a tar sealed court was laid down where the original school used to be situated. By the late 1930's 2 concrete courts had been laid and the club has had keen membership and supporters for most of its life, enjoying local competitions and tournaments as well as competing with the neighbouring clubs of the time, Te Uku, Raglan and Okete.
The pavilion which still stands was built around 1950 by Jack Surman.
Looking through the minute of books from the 50's through to the 90's show great membership numbers with long established family names featuring as players as well as committee members.
Throughout the years many school teachers played a prominent part in building up the club and kids involvement in the sport is evident both during school hours as part of physical education as well as after school coaching and tournaments set up specifically for juniors.
The last recorded AGM for the club was 2003.
