TRY OUTS EVERY MONDAY IN OCT 2016, 5.45pm @ Westhaven Marina, Auckland

The Rookies

You've found "The Rookies" Dragon Boat Team page.

The concept for The Rookies is to be the social/intake dragon boat team of the Lion Dragon Boat Club the oldest dragon boat club in New Zealand thus coached by the club paddlers and internationally experienced coaches.

This year we have recruited 9 men/12 women over the age of 12 to start up the team. Some Rookies might stay social for life and some may graduate to the Lion Premier A team.  At this point we have our quota of women but need 3 more strong men so if you're interested in the sport check out how to get involved.

This is a social team however dragon boating is a competitive sport - you will be training to compete in the Auckland Regional Dragon Boat Championships Premier B division across 200m, 500m and 2km race courses.  The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place wins medals and trophies.

WORLD MASTERS GAMES - DRAGON BOATING 40+

"The Rookies" dragon boat team will be recruiting paddlers of all ages but if we have enough (12) keen paddlers over the age of 40 we can enter a small boat rookie team to the World Master's Games.

Alternatively if you are already fit and catch on to the technique you could be joining the Lion Premier A team at the master's games.

PARKING

There is free parking at Pier X in the white spaces and it's only 3 mins walk.

If you can't be bothered and want to park close over pay for parking, they ticket the second you run out.

CONTACTS

Team Manager - Alisha 021 467 555

Head Coach - Sooupu

Coaches - Lion Dragon Boat Team members

WHAT TO WEAR

You can't wear long pants or anything that will get heavy when wet like heavy cotton t-shirts, your arms will feel like lead.

In summer singlet, shorts and jandals are just fine.

In spring/autum add skin tight thermals, dri gear or quick dry t-shirt, boat shoes.  If you are particularly sensitive to the cold wear a beanie - you'll get hot once we have you paddling.

Bring a change of clothes - you'll get splashed, water - lots of it, towel.

IT'S RAINING! WILL WE STILL TRAIN?

Yes - It's a water sport - you're gonna get wet anyway.

Lion Dragon Boat Club has the most qualified safety resources in the Auckland Dragon Boat Association.  We have the most sweeps and coaches all in one team.  It's rare we cancel.  We will modify training to suit the conditions so be prepared to hang out with the old sea dogs of dragon boating.

Social Races

there are also social races about one a month starting November and training camp in February at Kai Iwi Lakes (hightlight of the season). These are not mandatory to enter so don't stress if you can't make them but you will gain a lot of experience, bond more as a team, enjoy the full culture of dragon boating in Auckland and have a load of fun.

Once you get your first taste of racing, it will change you.  Check out our regional association website for those dates.
