The History of Tokoroa Association Football Club
Tokoroa AFC has been a proud part of the South Waikato community for nearly 70 years, marking its Platinum Jubilee in 2023. The club first took shape in 1953 as Kinleith United, founded to bring organised football to a growing town with a big heart for sport. In 1958, the club adopted the name Tokoroa AFC, beginning a new chapter of identity, growth, and community connection.
Our early years were spent at Tokoroa’s Memorial Sportsground, where we played for 16 seasons before moving in 1974 to Strathmore Park—our home ever since. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of generations of players, supporters, and volunteers, the club now boasts purpose-built clubrooms overlooking our No.1 pitch, providing a home base for senior and junior football throughout the year.
Tokoroa AFC has always punched above its weight. In the late 1960s, we became one of the first Waikato clubs to compete in the Northern League, travelling to Auckland nearly every second weekend. This era helped cement our reputation for tough, competitive football—matched equally by the strong social culture that forged friendships with clubs across the region.
Over time, Tokoroa AFC has continued to expand, now offering football to players of all ages and abilities, with teams competing across the Waikato–Bay of Plenty (WaiBOP) region. We are also proud to support grassroots development, including one of the region’s largest primary school competitions.
Our legacy is one built on passion, resilience, and community spirit. From humble beginnings to a thriving modern club, Tokoroa AFC remains committed to providing quality football opportunities and proudly representing our town every time we take the field.
