Te Wharekura o Ngā Purapura o Te Aroha had risen from a need to provide an option of Māori medium education in Te Awamutu.

Our kura began as a rumaki unit with 23 tamariki at Parāwera School until their Board were no longer in a position to accommodate.

Where no other options were available, a whānau member offered their home as a venue to home school which continued for 4 months.

The Kura became a satellite under Te Wharekura o Maniapoto, formerly known as Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Oparure.

In 2007, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa provided an interim teaching and learning space at their Apakura campus in Te Awamutu
In 2009 members of the Board of Trustees and an appointed member from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa submitted an application to The Ministry of Education for Kura status.
In July 2011, Te Wharekura o Ngā Purapura o Te Aroha received status as a designated Special Character school under section 156 of the Education Act..
Our kura is currently Decile 4, located at 190 Factory Road, Te Awamutu
In 2012 the Tumuaki and Board Chair began negotiations with MOE for capital works funding for purpose build.

After five years of navigating through the systemic inequities, our desire tocampaign for capital works funding finally came to fruition in 2016.
Although the Ministry of Education had approved capital works funding, it took a further two years of negotiations with the Ministry before the new build commenced.
In mid-December 2019, the keys to our new kura was handed over and the whakawātea of the whare was performed.
In 2020 our roll is flourishing with 105 tamariki. Due to Covid-19 we have not yet had a chance to ground roots within our new kura.
2021 stage two was completed. November 2021 our playground was installed.
2022 Term one we closed kura for 5 weeks due to Covid-19 and returned to online learning.
