Established in 2015 by the Otago University Rugby Football Club (OURFC), in honour of Russell Church, who died in 2012. Russell was a tireless worker for the Club in numerous roles over many years. He was made a Life Member of the Club in 1998.

The prize shall be awarded annually by the University Council on the recommendation of the OURFC to a full-time undergraduate student (enrolled predominantly at 200-Level or higher), who is an OURFC team member, has demonstrated academic excellence throughout his or her study at the University of Otago, shown commitment to the OURFC, has promoted the ethos of the Club and the University, and has displayed excellence in other fields. The same recipient cannot be awarded the prize in subsequent years. The prize is the sum set down in the current prize schedule.
