Valley Sports Club
Valley Sports Club was formed in 1988, following the amalgamation of three local rugby clubs – Union, Enfield and Weston Pirates. With changing population numbers making it difficult to sustain three separate senior teams in the North Otago Rugby Football Union competition, the clubs united to ensure organised sport remained strong and accessible in the district.
From that decision, Valley was born – built on collaboration, resilience and a deep commitment to community.
Over time, the club expanded beyond rugby, welcoming Cricket and Netball into its structure under the incorporated name Valley Rugby Football Club (Inc).
Today, Valley Sports Club represents a collective sporting hub – bringing multiple codes together under one banner and strengthening community ties across generations.
The club’s identity is closely tied to its location within the Weston and wider Waiareka communities. Weston, situated just 6km west of Oamaru and home to around 2,000 people, is a small but proud community where sport plays a central role in local life. Valley Sports Club provides opportunities for people of all ages to participate in organised sport – a vital asset in a rural setting where connection and belonging matter.
Based at Weston Domain, and located next to Weston School, the club plays an important role in fostering participation from an early age. By providing access to sports grounds and facilities for the school and local families, Valley helps nurture lifelong involvement in sport and community life.
More than just a sports club, Valley is a gathering place – where friendships are formed, traditions are honoured, and the community comes together.
