Background:
Waihora Park Domain (also known as Waihora Park Reserve) is a non-profit community-owned park and sportsground in Motukarara, 136 Park Road, 20 km from Christchurch near the main Akaroa Highway, beside the racecourse.
We offer picnic areas, extensive grassed areas for events, a children's playground and tree hut, walking and mountain bike tracks, tennis courts, a free gas barbeque and clean toilet amenities in peaceful tree-sheltered surroundings. There are tennis courts and large grass sports ground available for informal games such as 5-a-side soccer and ultimate Frisbee.
We are beside the Motukarara Racecourse, Department of Conservation Native Plant Nursery, Waihora Pony Club and the Little River Rail Trial. Waihora Park Reserve is the venue for the popular Motukarara Community Fireworks Evening (November) and the multisports event Blood Sweat & Tears (June).
Casual visitors have access to picnic, playground and grassed areas free of charge. The main grounds are also available for hire for large groups. They have been used for events such as corporate and family fun-days; equestrian events including dressage competitions, orienteering, dog training events and shows, car and motorbike rallies, donkey and horse society shows.
We also allow casual camping ($10 per vehicle/per night) and provide clean public toilets and running water.
