I recently ran an H Clinic at Phillips Equine in Matangi. This was a
great way for the riders who attended to become more familiar with the
requirements of H Certificate and for the coaches to get ideas on how to
teach these topics
In the time available the seventeen people who attended worked hard and
we covered many of the H topics, including feeding, digestive system,
bony and bursal ailments, corrective shoeing, the use of studs,
temperature, pulse and respiration, assessment of conformation and
running up to view action, preparation for travel, teeth and ageing,
lunging, ride and lead, checking saddlery for soundness, bits and
bitting (including the double bridle) and assembling clippers – we
packed it in!
As you can see from the photos, as much "hands on" practice as possible
was included (had great fun with the "lunging"!). There were many
interesting props available plus Lorraine Phillips supplied excellent
horses to work with. H requires a good depth of knowledge and this
course gave the riders and coaches a great introduction upon which they
can build and develop their knowledge and understanding.
On the final day two of the coaches, Lorraine Phillips (Waikato) and
Steph Mann (South Wairarapa) were assessed for their ECTP H level and as
a fitting conclusion to a great weekend both these ladies passed!
Horse management clinics can be run at any level - just get in contact if you'd like to have one run in your area
