Code of Behaviour
This code outlines broad principles of acceptable behaviour in college sports. Breaches of this code, or any other code of conduct, may lead to disciplinary action by the student’s school, College Sport Wellington under its By-Laws, or Regional Sports bodies.
Players Code:
- Play to the best of your ability while adhering to the rules of the game.
- Recognise and respect the abilities of both teammates and opponents.
- Accept officials’ decisions without gesture or argument.
- Represent your school with pride and integrity.
- Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.
- Support your coaches and follow their instructions.
- Thank the coach, officials, opponents, and supporters after the game.
Coaches/Managers Code:
- Set clear and appropriate guidelines and behavioural standards for yourself and your athletes both on and off the playing field.
- Provide all players with equal opportunities to participate.
- Take responsibility for your players’ conduct both on and off the field.
- Instil a sense of pride and respect in players’ performance.
- Treat all players, including opponents, with dignity and respect, and demonstrate positive sportsmanship at all times.
- Respect and accept the decisions of officials without dispute.
Parents Code:
- Positively encourage and support all players.
- Make an effort to understand the rules of the game.
- Refrain from criticising or abusing officials.
- Focus on genuine effort over victory, and encourage players to accept the outcome of all games, regardless of the result.
- Recognise and appreciate good play from both teams, and avoid ridiculing any individual player.
- Ensure that any form of violence is actively discouraged and in no way acceptable.
Supporters Code:
- Encourage all participants to play within the rules.
- Display self-control and good sportsmanship on the sidelines.
- Show appreciation to coaches and officials who facilitate the game.
- Remember that young people participate in sports for their enjoyment, not yours.
Officials Code:
- Control the game fairly and positively.
- Be consistent and objective in your rulings.
- Adjust your approach to suit the level of player skill.
- Help players learn the rules by explaining decisions when appropriate.
- Ensure that everyone enjoys the game by promoting fair play and discouraging foul play.
- Be a positive role model at all times.
