WELLINGTON CANOE POLO ASSOCIATION

What is Canoe Polo?

Canoe Polo is an exciting, fast-paced sport where two teams of five players compete to score goals using a water polo ball. The game is played on either open water or in a pool, with goals suspended above the water. Each match consists of two 10-minute halves, and players use canoes to move and control the ball.

Players need a combination of canoeing skills and teamwork, including the ability to perform an Eskimo roll if they are tipped over while holding the ball. Matches are fast-paced, and overtime is sometimes used to break ties.

Canoe Polo is perfect for kids over 12 years old, of all skill level and is played by all around the world. It's a great way for individuals to develop their canoeing skills, stay active, and have fun while learning new techniques. Many clubs offer beginner-friendly competitions, and with growing global interest, it’s a sport anyone can try!

What do I need to play?

All you need to bring is togs, a towel and rash top.

The club provides players with a kayak, paddle, deck, personal flotation device (PFD), and helmet. If you already have access to any of the provided gear, you’re welcome to bring it along!

Can I try canoe polo before signing up for a term?

Each term, we hold an open night designed to give players a taste of the sport. This night gives you a chance to see what Canoe Polo is all about and learn more about the game. We post details of these open nights on our club’s Facebook page as an event. Our next open night is Monday 3rd of February at 7pm.

What does it cost to play?

The term cost is $100, plus a yearly affiliation fee. The first session is free, but pool entry is an additional cost.
