Notice to all club captains, coaches, managers & umpires

CLUB SECRETARIES:

To help with the smooth running of hockey, please send this memo from the West Coast Hockey Association & Westurf Recreation Trust to all of your club’s team captains, coaches, managers & umpires.

RESPECT THE TURF!

Clean your shoes before going on the turf, do not damage the turf, and do not jump the fence.

DUTY TEAMS

Are listed in the weekly published draw.

Open Up Duty - team listed at the start of the day must:

• Open the turf gate at least 15 minutes before the first scheduled game (there is a key held (for immediate return) at the Turfside Dairy).

• Return the key to the dairy immediately after opening the gate.

• Set out the goals: Mini grade goals are the 4 wooden board goals, placed on the sideline at each 23 metre line. Mini goals are stored on two bits of timber behind the northern shelter – check they are clean before setting them out. All other grades are full field, and the two proper goals should be wheeled carefully into position.

Close Down Duty team at end of day:

• Ensure dugouts are tidy and clean up any rubbish on the ground. Place ‘lost property’ tidily in the first dugout.

• Return goals to practice circles after the week’s last competition game (usually Saturday night).

• Mini goals go back on the two bits of timber behind the northern shelter.

• Turn off lights promptly.

• Empty rubbish bins into the wheelie bin at the gate.

• Lock the gate.

[Note: the duty team may be fined if these tasks are not done.]

LIGHTS & WATER CANNONS

These are to be turned on ONLY by responsible people who have been shown how to.

Lights must be turned off by a responsible person immediately after the last match/training of the night.

TEAM CARDS

• These are located in the first dugout. Please advise the WCHA Secretary if card stocks have run out. They are NOT to be used as scrap paper.

• Should be completed fully and correctly – First and Last names of all players. At the end of the game, managers should ensure that the umpire crosses off any nonplayers listed.

• A game writeup on the card (by either or both team managers, up to about 40 words) is essential for media reports.

• Place cards in the letterbox next to the turf shop & noticeboard. This is the umpires’ job, but team managers should also check that this is done.

DEFAULTS

If your team needs to default a match (fewer than 7 players), the team manager must promptly notify:

• Opposing team’s coach/ manager, AND

• Both umpires for that game, AND

• Graham Bone (Westurf) – any turf fees charged (usually only for defaults at short notice) must be paid by the defaulting team, AND

• WCHA Registrar Don Neale ([email protected]), or fill out a scorecard labeled “Default” and indicating the teams and the winner)

Contact details below, or the club contacts listed on the turf noticeboard.

CANCELLATIONS

Games are very seldom cancelled because the turf drains very quickly after rain, but Mini and sometimes Primary hockey can be called off by the WCHA or by the umpires at short notice or during the game if the weather is very bad.

UMPIRES

• Check the draw. If you have been nominated for umpiring duties, you must check the draw each week, and advise the Registrar at least a week before if you are unable to umpire. Each club must have a system to ensure that their members’ umpiring duties are fulfilled. The onus comes back on the Club Presidents.

• Start the game on time. Late starts are unfair to the teams following.

• Hand back noncompleted scorecards (see above) to the team captain, to be promptly fixed up.

• Complete your bits of the card. Score tallies, final score, green/yellow/red cards, umpires notes, signature.

• Place completed cards in the letterbox next to the turf noticeboard

TRAINING SESSIONS

• Return the key to the dairy immediately after opening the gate.

• If the goals are in the White circles when a team arrives they must be shifted to the BLUE (sideline) circles before starting practice. This is important as we are trying to save the goalmouths from wear. There is a penalty for not observing these rules.

• Have someone responsible to turn the lights off and on.
