Length of Game

  • 4 x 8 minute quarters.  There is no injury time i.e. the clock is not stopped if there is an injury.

Break Times

  • 2:3:2 minutes

Change of Ends

  • Teams change ends after each quarter.  NNZ rules say to change at half time only, but it was agreed that SNC would change every quarter to get players and umpires used to teams changing every quarter.

Umpiring

  • 2 x umpires.  All Junior umpires need an umpire supervisor with them that is actively supervising and providing assistance where required.

Positions

  • 2 x A, 2 x c, 2 x D

Areas of Play

  • A – Centre third and attacking goal third including the goal circle
  • C – All thirds except in the goal circles
  • D – Centre third and defence foal third including the goal circle

Centre Pass

  • One centre from each team is to play Paper, Scissors, rock to determine who will start with the ball, at the start of each quarter.
  • The Centre in possession of the ball shall stand wholly within the centre circle. The opposing centre is to stand within the centre third.
  • The two Centres not involved in the centre pass can stand on either side-line of the centre third, and must stand together.  We recommend they stand on the side the scorer/timer are on.
  • The Centres in each team take alternative Centre passes.
  • All other players shall be in the goal third which is part of their playing area and are free to move.  None of these players are allowed in the centre third until the whistle has been blown to start or restart play.

Restart Play

  • Play shall be restarted after every goal, by a Centre from the non-scoring team.

Time with Ball

  • The ball can be held for up to five seconds.

Footwork

  • Players are encouraged to stop and land balanced, and apply the footwork rule.

Defending the Ball

  • A 1m defending distance is used to all players space to pass.

Throw in

  • Players take turns throwing the ball in e.g. if it is a defence throw in, in the goal third, one defender throws in and then the other defender would take the next throw in

Rotation

  • Players must start in a different position each week
  • Each player must play at least half a game each week
  • Subs can be made at any quarter break, or in the event of injury
