Wellington Secondary Schools

The Wellington Association support and promote Target Shooting as a sport for Secondary School Students in Wellington.

Secondary schools:  students currently taking part in this sport are from:  Scots College, Wellington College, Wellington Girls, St. Patricks College,  Queen Margaret College, Rongotai College, Samuel Marsden, Newlands College, Wellington High and Onslow.

Competitions available to schools:

Wellington and Hutt Valley Secondary Schools Team Competition

This is an annual event open to all secondary schools who wish to enter a team.

There is no entry fee, but entries must reach the organiser seven days before competition starts.

There are two rounds. Round one is held Petone and round two in Wellington.

Teams consist of a minimum of four and a maximum of six shooters (best four scores to count for the school team's total).  

Individual students can (if school doesn’t have enough for a four-person team) shoot in a combined team. These combined teams are not eligible for team trophies.

Shooting using a rest is not permitted. Coaching is allowed from the back of the mound.

All team members shoot one x 10-shot target in each round.

Annual trophies will be presented at the end of round two and schools are responsible for engraving and returning the following year.

Medals supplied by College Sport Wellington to the winning team and top scorer in each team are presented via Schools at the end of Term 3.

After Round 2 is completed, 12 shooters are selected from among the Wellington competitors for the Wellington Representative team who then compete against the Hutt Valley and Manawatu schools in the Triangular Inter-Association Secondary Schools Match.  (Other areas i.e. Christchurch, Marlborough, Waikato also at times enter teams.)

Triangular Inter-Association Secondary Schools Rep Match

In this match each member shoots 2 x 10 shot targets.

Certificates are presented to all Wellington team members.

(Students do not need to be affiliated to WSRA or TSHV etc, but must be a fulltime members of the secondary school they are shooting for and must be able to shoot using a sling.  

Clubs or schools must supply all shooting gear and ammunition required for their team.)

TSNZ Inter-secondary schools match (Nationals)

This two-day annual event is held alternately in Blenheim, Palmerston North, Christchurch and Wellington.

Secondary schools may only enter one team of three shooters. (Emergencies don't shoot)

All teams must be accompanied by a team coach with a firearms licence and if possible a teacher.   

Schools are responsible for arranging transport and accommodation for teams.

TSNZ Office send out entry forms to all NZ secondary schools and entries must be sent to the TSNZ office by 31 August;  Team names are to be supplied with the entry form and signed by the school Principal.   Entry fee is payable to TSNZ.

Shooting using rests is not permitted. 

All team members shoot three x 10-shot targets.

Medals are presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd individual shooters, and to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams. 

A framed certificate will be awarded to the winning school and all participants will receive certificates.

Inter-Island secondary schools match

The top 12 shooters from each island in the inter-secondary school match form North and South Island teams.

All team members shoot two x 10-shot targets.

Certificates and medals will be awarded to all members of the winning team.

New Zealand secondary schools match

The New Zealand secondary schools team is selected from the top 12 shooters, based on their aggregated scores in the schools team match and the inter-island match.

All team members will shoot two x 10 shot UK cards, with the top 10 shooters’ scores counting for the team total against Great Britain.

Certificates and medals will be awarded to all members of the NZ team, along with a British pennant.

There will be a plate match (two x 10 shot cards) for those not selected for the New Zealand team.

Individual awards: Trophies will be awarded to the top girl and top boy, based on the aggregate scores in the schools team match and the inter-island match.

TSNZ Challenge – secondary schools postal competition

This is a sponsored postal school teams match organized by Target Shooting New Zealand.

Entries (and fee) must reach TSNZ office by the due date.   Early entries qualify for free ammo.

Open to all full time students.

Grades: girls, boys, mixed or rest.    A team consists of three members.

Each shooter may compete in only one team.

All shooters who choose to shoot off a rest (ie not using a sling) must enter the ‘rest grade’

Only shooters who are not currently affiliated to TSNZ may shoot off a rest.

Each shooter must shoot two ten shot targets.  Stickers are supplied by TSNZ

Results (on results sheet provided) must be received at the TSNZ Office by 31 August.

New Zealand National Secondary Schools' Shooting Championship  

The National Secondary Schools' Shooting Championship - better known as The NZ Triple S Champs

This competition is open to all NZ secondary school students.

This is aimed at giving secondary school shooters the chance to compete nationally for both individual and team glory and recognition.

The competition was started by the Brooklyn Club in 2011.
