Pony Club in Christchurch started in 1947, with branches at Cashmere, Riccarton and Fendalton. In 1949 further clubs were established at Belfast, Halswell and Bangor. As more clubs formed in the Christchurch area Belfast transferred to the control of the North Canterbury Club Area to maintain a more even membership distribution. Belfast celebrated their 50th Jubilee during Easter 1999.

Belfast operated in the early years from several private properties in the Belfast Junction area, moving from the Orchard opposite the Groynes into the Groynes Reserve on 28 March 1983. Development in the Groynes area in 1999 saw the Club lose access to the cross - country course across dairy paddocks adjoining the club. Negotiations with Christchurch City Council led to new grounds at Chaneys Corner being offered for occupation in 2000.
