Canterbury Country Tennis Seniors (formerly Canterbury Country Veterans) was formed on Friday 18th July 2980 after Ian Jones convened a meeting at Wilding Park, Christchurch with the express purpose of forming a country association for all country sub-associations.  Those who attended that first meeting were the late Mr and Mrs Ted Young from Mid Canterbury, Bill Lewthwaite and the late Percy Ussher from Banks Peninsula, Tony Smith and the late Shirley Dalzell from Hurunui, Alec Swanson, Errol Woodward and Murray Wilson from Malvern and Ian Jones, Wendy Challies and Stuart Suckling from Ellesmere.

The first committee was elected - Ian Jones (President), Stuart Suckling (Secretary), Percy Ussher, Bill Lewthwaite, Tony Smith, Shirley Dalzell, Alex Swanson, Bobby Henderson (Malvern), Ted Young, Bob Fox (North Canterbury) and Jill Lundy (North Canterbury).

The New Zealand rules were adopted which was veterans to be aged 40 years and over. Sub-Association games were played with 8 men and 8 women with doubles and mixed doubles to be played and to be the best of 3 sets.  Each sub-association played each other throughout the season.
Country championships were played at Wilding Park in the first season but after that a field day was held on the grass courts.  Upwards to 100 players attended these great days.
