KCC Current Season Results 2023/2024

Another success for KCC

Plimmerton Croquet Club’s annual Easter GC Singles Tournament was run in four handicap grades. This year, Garry Robertson, a KCC member for two years, entered the grade for players with handicaps of 9 or higher.

This competition was held on Easter Monday, 1 April. It was played initially as two, round robin groups of five, followed by a playoff between the winners from each group to determine the overall winner.

At the first stage, Garry clearly won the Group B section by 4 games to zero. He then went on to defeat the Group A winner by a score of 7-4 to take the overall prize, donated by Summerset Aotea. During the tournament, he also reduced his handicap for the second time this season.

Well played Garry!

Petone-Central social visit to Khandallah on14 March

Jennifer Mackrell, our KCC President welcomed a group of six GC players from Petone-Central on a calm and sunny morning. Roger Hurnard, Club Captain, then explained the format of the games. This was like the one used at Muritai the previous week and involved nine, double-banked games of 6 hoop doubles with a 25-minute time limit. Scoring was based on the number of hoops won, rather than the number of games won.

Play started at 9:30 am and was completed by 12:30pm. A light lunch was then provided.

Result

Khandallah defeated Petone-Central by 27 points to 17. The KCC teams were: K1: David Littlejohn & David Hutton; K2: Garry Robertson & Liz Beresford; K3: Charles Beresford & Sandra Gaelic.

Khandallah group visit to Muritai on 7 March

Six players travelled to Eastbourne to enjoy an afternoon of quick-fire games and a delicious afternoon tea hosted by the Muritai Croquet Club.

Like KCC they have only a single lawn, so the format of play was the one used during their visit to KCC earlier in the season where three teams from each club played a round robin competition. This involved nine, triple-banked games of 6 hoop doubles with a 25-minute time limit. Scoring was based on the number of hoops won, rather than the number of games won.

Results

Games were tied at 4½ each. However, KCC won on hoops scored, 26 to 21 and so retained the Challenge Mug.

The KCC Players

KCC Singles levels competition for handicaps of 8 to 11

Four KCC members entered this competition, run on Saturday 24 February. This allowed it to be structured as a simple round robin format that involved three rounds of double-banked 13-hoop games. The weather was unexpectedly cool and windy, but the overall standard of play was very good, and the players appreciated the hot sausage rolls provided by Ros Paterson to sustain them. Play was completed by lunchtime.

Results: The overall winner was David Littlejohn, followed by Andrew Crisp, Julie Reid and Bill Paterson.

By the completion of this competition, David had succeeded once again in reducing his handicap.

KCC Twighlight Doubles Tournament

This club tournament was run over four consecutive Wednesday afternoons/evenings between 24 January and 14 February 2024. The weather was kind, unlike in some previous years, so all games were completed without any interruptions or postponement.

Nine teams were selected so that the combined handicaps of each pair were similar, and the 13-hoop games were played as levels doubles, with a time limit of 50 minutes per game. Each team played two games including a BBQ supper break each evening. This meant that a full round robin was completed in four weeks. The rules allowed for substitute players to be used when a regular player was unavailable.

The final results were:

1st           John Tiley and Marj Lawson         (7             wins, 21 net points);

2nd          David Littlejohn and Karen                                    Armstron (7 wins, 13 net points);

3rd           Alison Bayly and Sandra Gaelic   (6             wins, 14 net points);

4th           Garry Robertson and Andrew Crisp                    (5 wins, 8 net points);
