Mackenzie Rugby Football Club
The club was formed in 1953, after the sub-union had been operating in the area since 1875. As there were only 4 teams left, Albury, Fairlie, Aorangi and Tekapo  the playing numbers were way down. From a meeting of the club’s it was decided that in 1953 on March 25th after a Public meeting that the Mackenzie Rugby Football Club was formed.

And 3 teams were entered into the South Canterbury Rugby Football Union’s Competition in 1953. Senior's, 4th Grade (U18), 5th Grade (U17)
The Coaches were: Seniors -  Mr. Bill McConnell , 4th Grade - Mr. Jim Edge, 5th Grade - Mr. Ces. Cotter. The first President was Mr. Bill Rooney.

Records on the first year were not very completive, but enthusiasm, team spirit and public support was tremendous.

Changing sheds were very limited with no showers and players washed in the creek that run through the grounds at Strathconan Park.  A far cry from today’s facilities.

Winning trophies by teams were few and far between -

1961 saw the Seniors win the Harris Cup.

1963 was the year that the first official club rooms were opened, after many years of hard graft fundraising with alot more blood, sweat, tears saw teams enjoy more space to change and socialize in, especially after originally having two ex army huts transported onto the sit in 1953. Where there was no heating, flagon beer, cold savs, etc for aftermatch functions. Colin McKinnon was the Presdient at the time.

1968 - More alterations were made in as the present facilities needed extending and a new kitchen was also included.

1977 - the Senior Reserve team (now Senior “B”) won the competition.

1978 - the club celebrated a very successful 25th Jubilee celebrations, Bill Pinkerton was the Chairman with Len King Secretary. Up to the minute squash courts have been built. Which has a very strong membership.

1994 - the seniors won the Harris Cup.

1996 - more upgrades were done in the clubrooms. Which now they are one of the best in the region.

One of the longest fund raising events the club has is the Mt Dalgety muster which started in 1977, the club has not missed a year since, could be a record for a club in N.Z.

Results were mixed through the next period until the club reached its 50th year in 2003.

When we won our first senior competition by taking out the “Old Bank Shield”. Kent Adams & Mark Ryan were the Coaches. We got runner-up the next year.

Over the years several lower grade teams have picked up competition wins.

The club has a good relationship with the community, very active in promoting it’s self to attract players to the region.
