To race, even at club level, you need to be licenced through Cycling NZ.  Whilst most racing is organised by cycling clubs, there are rules and etiquette set out by Cycling NZ that ensure the safe and fair racing for everyone.  So, if you want to improve your riding skills and cycling performance through cycle racing, joining a cycling club is the only sensible way.

By obtaining your licence you are covered through Cycling NZ for Public Liability Insurance (see policy details)  Click here

Membership and Licensing Categories

You can obtain a licence to race a) in New Zealand b) Overseas and c) in Cycling NZ sanctioned Schools events.

For New Zealand racing you select which Cycling Club you want to belong to e.g. North Harbour.

  1. New Zealand racing – this entitles you to race in NHCC managed club-level events; Auckland Centre, and national level events including national championships and open events outside Auckland.  It does NOT entitle you to race in events organised by other clubs.

Questions and Answers

Here are some general questions and answers about NHCC membership:

Qu. I’ve never raced and I’m worried about going up against experienced riders.  Is it right for me?

Ans. Everyone has to start somewhere.  The North Harbour Junior Tour and the Summer Criterium series are designed to help riders begin racing.

Qu. Does North Harbour CC have any famous Members?

Ans. Several well-known cyclists who race / have raced at International level started at NHCC including Mike Northey.  James Oram, Georgia Williams and Dion Smith are all members.

Qu. Can I try racing before I have to join as a Member?

Ans. Yes.  You can race for a period of two weeks before you need to be licensed.

Qu. Do I have to be a certain age?

Ans. Anyone over the age of 12 is able to join as an individual member.

Qu. Why would I join more than one Club?

Ans. The Clubs in the Auckland Region run a variety of race events.  You need to be a member of each club in whose races you wish to participate.

Qu. Does my licence entitle me to free entry into events like the Lake Taupo Challenge?

Ans. No.  These are commercially run events, each with their own entry criteria and fees.  They are not races as such although entrants receive a ride time.

Qu.  Are the above costs the total fees for racing with the Club?

Ans. No.  Each event or race usually has a small entry fee to cover the cost of organisation.  This can range from say $10 for a Criterium race to about $60 for entry to the Junior Tour which includes four races over two days.

Qu.  If I join part way through the year does the membership fee change?

Ans. No. The calculated fee applies to a full or part year.  This is the fee that you will be charged when applying online through the Cycling NZ website.
