FAQs

How do I register to play club rugby?

Click on the club logo/link you want to register for above. On the club websites you will find registration forms for players coaches, and volunteers.

When does rugby season start and finish in 2024?

Senior rugby starts end March for Premier/Reserves, April for all other senior teams and 1st week after school holidays in Term 2 for all juniors and IMB teams.

What does my child need to do in order to register/play for the first time?

When you register online you just need to know your childs year at school and proof of date of birth (which will be shown when you head to the muster day).

What skills/experience do I need to become a referee?

None! Everything will be taught once you join up.

Do I need to register as a club volunteer?

Yes. It’s important to register so your club knows you are available, but also for the NRU and NZR to contact you with support.

What training is available to me as a club rugby coach?

This can be discussed with the Coach Development Officer, and is dependant on what age grade you are coaching.

Do I need to know how to play rugby to join a club?

Not at all. Rugby is a game that is learnt better either on the field, or sidelines.

What equipment/clothing will I need to play rugby?

Depending on the club and age grade, boots, shorts, socks and a mouth guard (although some clubs provide these). Your chosen club will be able to provide you with more information.

What formats of rugby are available for my child?

7s, 10s 15s, schools, seniors, girls only grades, are all available. See the clubs/grades download in our resources section above for more information.

Do club rugby coaches get paid?

Whilst some rugby coaches may get paid, NRU see this as a voluntary role.

How often do I have to train?

Most senior teams train twice a week on a Tuesday and Thursday.

If I have any further questions about club rugby, who can I contact?

The NRU or your local club will be able to answer any questions you may have. You will find our NRU registrations contact person below.
