KiwiSport is a Government funding initiative to support sport for school-aged children. KiwiSport was launched by the Prime Minister on 11 August 2009.

KiwiSport provides funding for schools for year 1-8 students and year 9-13 students via the Ministry of Education  to achieve the following aims:

  • To increase the number of school aged children participating in organised sport.
  • Support children in developing the skills at a grassroot level that will enable them to participate effectively.
  • Foster positive relationships with local schools and clubs.
  • Increase the availability and accessibility of sporting opportunities
  • Develop projects that reflect the seasonal nature of sport

Participation levels
Approximately 12 - 17 codes a year are offered to Taupo schools with high quality deliverers engaging students to take part in their sport. Last year despite Covid 19 we still engaged 13,067 participants (individual involved in a programme delivered for a sport, child can be involved in multiple sports) Every year we introduce new codes.

Festivals

Festivals have become a big part of the programme – GoGirls Cricket and Football have become very popular with numbers each year increasing.

In summary the KiwiSport opportunities continue to grow and see children, schools and clubs engaging positively to the new experiences they are receiving.
Lake Taupo Sports Advisory Council is fully committed to ensuring this programme continues for many years to come.
