The Football Boys: The story of Association Football at Wellington College

Pre 1946While association football formally commenced at Wellington College in 1946, there were strong Coll/Football connections long before then. The table below provides highlights of these in the context of the College’s history. We would like to acknowledge AB Beasley, Colin Chin and Don Neely for their assistance in providing information for this section and, indeed, for the overall Football Boys story. AB Beasley is a former Wellington College chairman who is the author of one of the College’s histories ‘The Light Accepted: 125 years of Wellington College’. Colin Chin spend one year, his third form, as a Coll student in 1956 before going to live in Southland. He wrote ‘The First Decade: Soccer at Wellington College’ an information packed 1000 word article in the 1956 Wellingtonian which also covered the pre 1946 era. Don Neely, a Rongotai College old boy, is one of New Zealand’s most respected sport historians and writers. A football player, he well remembers football coming to Coll and the subsequent matches he played against us!
