Overview

The headquarters for the AC Worlds are Kelburn Municipal Croquet Club (MCC), which is easily accessed from hotels in central Wellington.

However, the distance between the southernmost venue, Wellington MCC, to the most northern venue, Waikanae Croquet Club (CC) on the Kapiti Coast, is approximately 63 kilometres (39 miles) via State Highway 1.  The journey takes nearly an hour by train or private vehicle, sometimes longer, depending on direction and time of day.

A back-up venue, Waimarie CC is at Lower Hutt.  Detailed locality maps will be available in the Welcome Pack and on are on this website. Click here.

All players and officials must be prepared to travel to any of the venues for the practice days and block play.  The main knock-out competition will be held at Wellington and Kelburn MCCs.   Most of the consolation matches (for the shield, bowl or plate) will be held on the Kapiti Coast at Plimmerton, Paraparaumu and Waikanae CCs.  Players and officials will be scheduled at just one venue for each day’s play.

There are several ways to travel to venues:

  • Private or rental vehicle
  • Train to the Kapiti Coast
  • Bus
  • Taxi
  • Cable car and/or on foot from downtown Wellington to the Kelburn headquarters.

Metlink is the public transport system for Wellington.  Use this link to find train, bus and ferry timetables: Click here

The Metlink Commuter App for iOS and Android will get real time information for your bus, train or harbour ferry services. Download the app from App Store or Google Play.

Players and officials will find a brochure and train timetable in their Welcome Pack.  Train and bus timetables are also available at the Wellington i-SITE Visitor Information Centre outside the Michael Fowler Centre, the central railway station, and other locations.

Rental vehicles

We recommend advance booking by internet for better rates, and ask for GPS to be provided.  There are numerous rental companies, including the following:

Car parking is free and plentiful at all venues except Kelburn MCC, where there is free parking for about 15 vehicles.  Street parking is also free at Kelburn but limited to two hours at a time, seven days a week.

Train   Click here

The Wellington Railway Station is centrally located, close to the city’s bus interchange. Kapiti Coast trains run two or three times per hour during the day, the first northbound leaving Wellington at 5.52am (earlier southbound from Waikanae), and once or twice per hour in the evening.

The cost varies from $8 to $12.50 for a standard adult one-way fare.  One-trip train tickets are available at the central railway station and on the trains (carry small notes or coins for this).  Ten-trip train tickets are available from the central station.

There is a five-minute walk from Plimmerton railway station to the croquet club.

Paraparaumu and Waikanae railway stations are several kilometres (about two miles) from the respective croquet clubs.  The host clubs will meet the train that leaves Wellington at 7.35am (or 7.44am weekends and Waitangi Day 6 February) and transport participants to their venues in time for the start of play for the day.  Other assistance may be available by arrangement.  There are also local buses (see below) that pass near each venue and a local taxi service.

Bus

Buses are frequent in the inner city and most routes pass through, or commence, at the bus interchange at the railway station.  Bus fares range from $2 to $5, depending on distance (bus zones), within Wellington City.  Tickets can be purchased on the bus with coins or low value notes.

Buses stop in Kelburn Parade near Salamanca Road (stop 4915), 400 metres from the Kelburn MCC

Buses stop in Constable Street at Coromandel Street (stop 7022), 400 metres from Wellington MCC.

Buses run from Paraparaumu and Waikanae Railway Stations two or three times per hour during the day (but note the clubs will also provide some transport, particularly before the start of play in the morning):

  • From Paraparaumu Railway Station, the 262 service stops on Mazengarb Road at Ratanui Road (stop 1114), less than two minutes’ walk from Paraparaumu CC.
  • From Waikanae Railway Station, the 280 service stops on Te Moana Road at Walton Avenue (stop 1501), less than 500 metres from Waikanae CC.

Taxi

There are several taxi companies, and all are reliable, for example:

Cable car  Click here

The cable car runs from Lambton Quay, the main shopping street.  Get out at the Salamanca stop, and walk 300 metres along Salamanca Road towards the university, or across the sports ground, to the Kelburn MCC.

The cable car runs every 10 minutes, from 7am until 10pm on weekdays.  Note the start time is 7.30am at the weekends.  The cost for an adult is $4 one way or $7.50 return.  Adult ten-trip tickets are $28.
