Wellington College Ice Hockey
Ice hockey is a fast-paced team sport that combines the cutting, fluid motions of ice skating with the quick hand-eye coordination of hockey. Ice Hockey is relatively new to Wellington as only recently a permanent ice skating facility put up. However, its popularity as a sport in the capital has been growing rapidly due in part to the commitment of WC students and staff.
In 2020 and 2021 there was a combined college ice hockey team which competed in the Wellington Ice Hockey Bear League against adult teams. The team, the Poneke Pirates, was coached by Mr Roth who previously played in the New Zealand National Ice Hockey League. The team consisted of mainly WC students, as well as students from other secondary schools within the Wellington region.
In 2022 there will be two ice hockey youth teams. One will be placed into a beginner league which will provide a great opportunity for players to pick up the sport in a safe environment. Another team consisting of experienced players will be placed into an intermediate grade.
In addition to this team, there are opportunities for beginners to get involved and start playing the sport so that they can work towards becoming playing in a Wellington league. There are currently ice hockey trainings open to beginners and players of all skill levels. The current trainings include drills to develop skating and puck handling skills, followed by casual game play.
The numbers of Wellington College students coming along to trainings is ever-increasing and we hope to have enough players for an exclusive WC ice hockey team to put forward into a league in the near future.
