2018 APA Junior Schools Petanque tournament 31st October, 2018

As a result of our May Schools Petanque tournament a request was made by schools for us to hold a Juniors tournament in the last term of 2018. And as a result we had 25 teams from 5 schools entered.  Some schools had attended our May tournament but there were a couple of new entrants which is good to see.

We were very lucky with the weather, the day dawning beautiful and sunny and as we know the Herne Bay terrains are a micro climate of their own on a hot day.

The final was held between Auckland Grammar School 1 [Peryn Griffiths, Edward Altoft and Tharana Seneviratne; coached by Sylvain Bidet] and Rutherford High School 5 [Rhys Wikitera-Mataio and Brad Atwell: coached by Jill Edgar].  A great tussle eventuated with the lead changing a number of times with Auckland Grammar coming out the winners with a score of 13 to Rutherfords 10.

An enthusiastic crowd of spectators cheered the players on.

Third place was a play off between Rutherford High School 1 [Arielle Schwalger, Eden Hatalafale and Manea Raea: coached by Jill Edgar]  and Henderson Intermediate 2 [Malita Tapu, Silia Falesiva and Phaliny Hemana-Maaka: coached by Morag Pepe].  Again another well played game with Rutherford taking out 3rd place with a score of 13 and Henderson 2.

Once again the tournament was well supported by volunteers helping with scoring, measuring and explaining the game to the children.

And it is pleasurable to see all the children entering into the spirit of the game, their enthusiasm is contagious. We look forward to welcoming them back next year.
