Officials Development

Athletics Otago is fortunate to have a dedicated team of qualified officials who ensure our interclub meets are run according to the rules of Athletics Otago.  Therefore athlete performances are able to be considered for Otago Records and Athletics NZ Rankings.

We are always keen to hear from individuals who would like to take up officiating and can offer mentoring to help you on your way.  

The following Event Classification Groups apply;

Group 1: Jumps (Long/Triple Jumps, High Jump, Pole Vault)

Group 2: Throws (Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, Javelin)

Group 3: Track (Judging, Wind Gauge, Lap Scoring, Umpiring, Starting, Time Keeping, Photo Finish)

Group 4: Walks (Walk Judging, Chief Judge (A & B), Recording, Posting Board, Pit Lane (A), General Track Officiating)

Group 5: Outside Events (Course Setting, Starting/Umpiring, Time Keeping, Judging/Lap scoring/Recording)

Group 6: Administration (Competition Management/Announcing, Recording, Seeding and Draws, Technical)

Group 7: Course Measurement (Course setting and Measuring for events outside the stadium up to and including Marathon distance)

Group 8: PARA (All events)

Remember to thank our officials after every event.  They are the lifeforce of our sport.

C Grade

Officiate in at least 2 of the elements in the Event Group. Written assessment.

Held locally by Joan Merrilees and Karen Palmer.

B Grade

Proficiency in at least 3 of the 4 (or 2 of the 3) elements in the Event Group. Written assessment.

A Grade

Proficiency in all aspects of the Event Group. Written assessment.
