What is “have a go day” and intention
Difference to regular racing, it is intended to be an introduction to the sport of motorcycle racing.
How do you sign up for HAGD?
Cost and licencing, and what type of bike, $90 all up unless you choose to get a garage.
Date and start time, fire extinguisher recommended, 9am Sign on.
What riding gear is needed
No textiles, leathers one or two piece must zip together, helmets, boots 25cm above inner sole, gloves, back protector must be EN 1621-2 Level 1 but 2 is recommended and chest protectors EN 1621-3 level 2
Age of gear helmets must be in good condition for HAGD and are not allowed to have any additional fixtures e.g. GoPro’s or comms. (For racing they are required to be less than ten years of age and stamped with production date.)
Conduct in the pits
How to enter, car parking and where you can setup and getting a garage
No smoking, drugs or alcohol
No open toe shoes
Speed limit 15km/hr
Listen to the announcer and read signs
No riding in the pits without a helmet under any circumstances.
Sign in under the tower
Rider gear check in next to the sign on table. Please bring up your riding gear for inspection.
Scrutineering after signing on please push bike up for inspection.
Take water, food can be purchased from food truck at lunch time.
Dummy Grid
Take note/screenshot the day’s race order posted under the tower
Listen to the announcer for your class turn
Where, entering the dummy grid, look left before entering and then park
Allow the Stewart to complete checks on the dummy grid. He is looking for helmet straps and back protectors so expect a tap on the back. Please don’t wait to far down pit lane as the gate marshal requires you to come forward to allow him/her to make their checks.
Racetrack
Track layout
Stewart will direct you to enter the track and look to your left as you enter
No passing on first lap, and trainer will show race lines
Flags – yellow, red, black, white and chequered
Will be shown at start/finish line continue to circulate until the hairpin, then hang right and come to a standstill, await instruction to head to pit wall exit at the start of the main straight. If A red flag is shown during the race, please sit up show hand signals so others can see you. Do Not Stop where you are, keep continuing around the track at a reasonable pace to the hair pin and then follow flaggie instructions. (If we travel to slow it slows down the ambulance response time as they are not allowed to enter the track until all bikes are under duress of the flaggies.
Yellow means no passing until the next flag point isn’t displaying a flag.
White flag displayed at the starter tower means one lap remaining.
Chequered means end of race.
Black flagged waved and pointed at you means you must exit the track at first available point it could be for many reasons.eg a fault on your bike which may cause injury.
Slowing down and stopping rider hand signals
Ride at your comfort level, you don’t want to crash your road bike.
Motorcycle preparation
Think WOF standards except for mirrors, lights and indicators
Check whole bike for loose fittings including exhaust, nuts and bolts
Check oil plugs and check oil leaks
Remove mirrors
Tape up all glass, no need to tape up plastic light covers or remove
Zip tie passenger foot pegs, centre stands and side stand
Screen fairing must have a rolled hard edge or be beaded
Check chain tension, check for clip or rivet on chain, silicon on clip
Check steering head and wheel bearings, and swing arm pivots
Check brakes and suspension
Check brake and clutch levers have safety ball at the ends
Check handlebars have end plugs
Good tread on tyres and regular tyre pressures are ok
Ok to use your regular petrol but if your bike pings then use higher octane and bring spare fuel.
Suggested Suspension Setup
Front race setting:
unloaded full length = x static should be 20-28mm loaded should be 30mm- 35mm
Front road setting:
unloaded full length = x static should be 25-32mm loaded should be 35-40mm
Rear race settings:
Unloaded full length = x Static should be 5-12mm less loaded should be 20-25mm less
Rear Road settings:
unloaded full length =x static should be 5-15mm loaded should be 25-30mm.
