NZDBA Sweep Accreditation

The NZDBA Sweep Accreditation program has been developed inline with maritime NZ regulations enabling our sweeps to be fully aware of their environment, in control of their teams, know the IDBF rules of racing with full knowledge of the rules of the road at sea.    Sweeps start at Level 0 (Novice) and can make their way through the program over the years to Level 5.

Sweep Accreditation Program

Sweeps steer the boat during training and racing, in fact, they are the legal captain of the boat.  In dragon boating we provide one-on-one training for individuals that want to take up the role of the sweep.  They will be put through a NZDBA certified program that includes aspects of maritime law to ensure they know the rules of the road at sea especially around other waterway users.

We require all novice sweeps to register with the program before hopping up on the back of the boat.  Once registered we'll organise the theory training and practical training.  You will be under instructure of a qualified trainer on the boat with you during your team training session.  Once the trainer is confident you are aware of your environment and in control of your team you will continue to sweep under indirect supervision i.e. your trainer will observe you from another dragon boat, the rescue boat or from land before you will be approved to sweep without supervision.  Once satisfied you have a practical assesment then sit multi-choice exam, a study book will be sent out once your registration is confirmed.
