HEAVYWEIGHTS MADE TO WORK FOR KNOCKOUT WINS

Wellington’s top clubs didn’t get things all their own way during round one of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup as their less fancied opposition made them work for their wins.

Four teams from lower divisions held their higher-ranked opposition at halftime of their ties, only to be overwhelmed in the second half or extra time.

The biggest effort was from Capital 2 leaders Seatoun, who very nearly beat Capital Premier team Upper Hutt City, before losing 7-3 in extra time in a wild one at Maidstone Park.

Seatoun led 3-2 going into injury time in the second half before Upper Hutt earned a penalty, converted by Stephen Thomas in the 93rd minute. That broke the visitors’ resistance as they went on to concede four goals in extra time.

Capital Premier’s Tawa also put up a stoic battle against Western Suburbs, holding them to 0-0 at halftime before losing 4-0.

Capital 1’s bottom team, Stokes Valley kept Capital Premier team, Island Bay United to 1-1 at halftime of their clash after a goal to Harry Gawtry, but also conceded four second-half goals to lose 5-1.

Capital Premier team, Petone went through the exact same process against Central League team, Wellington Olympic. A Jordan Pickering goal had them at 1-1 at halftime before they lost 5-1.

The all-Central League clash between Lower Hutt City and Miramar Rangers was won by the former, with Jack Imray grabbing a brace in a 4-2 triumph.

Capital Premier leaders North Wellington had a few nervy moments in the second half of their match against Capital 1’s Brooklyn Northern United. They had a 3-0 halftime lead before eventually winning 4-2.

The other games were exact opposites in tension levels. Wainuiomata beat Marist 1-0 and Victoria University prevailed 3-2 against Naenae, while Kapiti Coast United hammered Martinborough 15-0.

In the Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup, Waterside Karori and Petone played out the match of the round.

The teams were scoreless through 90 minutes, with Karori’s Millie Lynskey scoring the game’s only goal in extra time for a 1-0 win for her side.

Victoria University were slightly more comfortable against Brooklyn Northern United, winning 3-1 in normal time, while Kapiti Coast United cruised past Stop Out 10-0.
