Three teams have cleared out at the top of the Ultra Football Central League table, while two more teams have been dragged into the relegation battle.
Napier City Rovers, Stop Out and Western Suburbs remained separated by just three points after wins over the weekend.
Leaders Napier were too good for Miramar Rangers, winning 3-1 thanks to a brace from Golden Boot leader Martin Bueno. The Uruguayan took his season tally to 14 with that effort.
Stop Out continue to grind out results, beating Lower Hutt City 2-1. Luis Corrales and Jerram Tuck both scored their eighth goals of the season, as did Lower Hutt’s Sam Johnson, who made for a nervy finish when scoring in the 85th minute.
Wests put Wairarapa United to the sword with a 6-1 win over Wairarapa United at Endeavour Park on Sunday. They had six different scorers in the rout, while Hamish Watson scored his side’s only goal.
At the other end of the ladder, Havelock North Wanderers’ 4-2 win over Wellington United has made things very interesting.
They led throughout the match to move to nine points, level with Waterside Karori - who lost 2-1 to Wellington Olympic after a 93rd-minute winner from Seth Ward - but behind by 16 goals on goal difference.
But they now have other teams in their sights, with Lower Hutt and Wairarapa sitting on 11 and 10 points respectively.
With seven games to go, the championship and relegation battles are starting to really heat up.
It’s a different story at the top of the Capital Premier standings, where North Wellington kept their nine-point lead intact with a 5-3 win over Tawa.
Tawa were good value in the match, holding North Wellington to 2-2 until the 77th minute when Chas Lawrence, Sean Clarke and Maksym Kowal all scored in the space of three minutes.
Petone remain second after their 2-0 win over Miramar’s reserves, while the relegation battle is even tighter than in the Central League.
Olympic’s reserves are bottom on 10 points after their 3-1 loss to Wests’ reserves, who moved to fifth with their win, but have just 13 points.
Other results saw Upper Hutt City beat Kapiti Coast United 1-0, and Island Bay United ease past Lower Hutt’s reserves 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from young gun Jesse Randall.
The W-League continues to be Wellington United’s to lose.
They powered past Palmerston North Marist 8-0 on Saturday with Michaela Robertson scoring four goals, while her sister, Jemma, bagged a hat-trick.
That kept them five points clear of Wairarapa United, who beat Seatoun 3-1.
Western Suburbs grabbed their best result of the season, beating defending champions Upper Hutt 6-3 to move level on 10 points with them.
