BYOL - BRINGING YOUR OWN LAPTOP TO SCHOOL

As new technologies continue to change the world in which we live, they also provide many new and positive educational benefits for classroom instruction. Within their classes, students increasingly use computers and other digital devices for a range of learning activities such as:

  • Research on the internet.
  • Filming videos.
  • Taking notes.
  • Working collaboratively online.
  • Reading online (ebooks, e-textbooks).
  • Downloading worksheets/workbooks.
  • Interviewing people outside the classroom via Skype.

To encourage growth, students at Central Hawke's Bay College are able to bring their own technology to school.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR BYOL

While many students already own laptops and other devices, some Parents/Caregivers ask what laptop or other device would we recommend. As a School we do not recommend a particular device as family and individual student needs differ. We have put together the following guidelines to help:

  • Screen: Must be a minimum screen size of 7".
  • Battery Life: 4-8 Hours of battery power (Preferably more) and easy options for recharging.
  • Wireless Networking Capable: Has built in wireless capability. Should state that it has b/g/n, or a/b/g/n.
  • Keyboard: Has some form of keyboard for typing (Built in or external).
  • Audio: Microphone and audio -out port (Supported by ear buds or headphones).
  • Protection: Has some form of antivirus/anti-spyware/malware protection.
  • Is lightweight, but robust enough to handle daily use.
  • Internet capable with web browser.
  • Protective case.

Please note, Smart phones have an obvious problem with screen size, we are therefore NOT allowing them to be the main device used within a classroom.

It is not compulsory for a student to have a device.
