About the Checkers Basketball Club

Founded in 1969, the Checkers Basketball Club is one of Canterbury's oldest and most respected basketball clubs. With a proud history spanning over five decades, we have built a strong tradition of excellence in local and New Zealand basketball.

Over the years, the Club has fielded as many as nineteen teams across a wide range of grades, producing numerous championship-winning sides. From grassroots competition to elite representative basketball, Checkers has consistently demonstrated its ability to attract, develop and inspire talented players.

Our alumni include a significant number of Canterbury representatives, New Zealand representatives, and players who have gone on to compete in the ANBL. Many of our members have proudly worn the colours of the Canterbury Rams and the Canterbury Wildcats/Pouakai women's team, as well as other national league clubs throughout the country. This track record reflects not only the quality of our players, but the calibre of our coaching staff - experienced mentors dedicated to advancing athletes to the highest levels of the game.
