Information for Novices: Parents

Sometimes it can be a little daunting when your child starts a new sport that you know nothing about and it can seem that you are expected to know information by osmosis!

  • Support in the Marquee

Parents are invited to attend regattas and support the athletes.

The club marquee is usually erected on the grass bank beside the water and everyone is welcome to set up camp there (Bring chairs, food/drink and binoculars).

Race times and results are on the whiteboard there so you can keep up to date with what's happening.

We have a table with home backing and tea and coffee avaialable for parents and supporters. We run a roster for provision of baking so please bring something yummy for the parents when it's your turn.

  • Boat park

You are asked to stay away from the boat park at all times to reduce distractions and allow the athletes to focus on their coach's instructions, their boat and their crew.

The only exception to this is usually our first regatta of the season (Te Awamutu Regatta) where parents are welcome in the boat park, as this is a small regatta.

  • The Rowit website

Rowit is the website for all rowing regatta results - http://rowit.nz/. To use this website, find the current regatta and then filter results by serching for our club, or your rowers name. All names etc are hyperlinked. Please ask a senior rower's parent if you want a hand learning how to use Rowit.

  • Accommodation at Karapiro

Some families stay at the Mighty River Domain camp site. Tent and caravan sites, as well as limited numbers of cabins are available. But they do get booked up well in advance, particularly as the season progresses - so get in quick to book. We do not organise or book accommodation as a club as many people opt to drive home at the end of each day.

Please remember that during the racing, rowers are expected to be in the boatpark or at the marquee so they can be found easily if needed.

  • Please ask if you have any questions

Lastly if you are unsure about something, then please approach the club captain, president, coach or the one of the other parents. They will be happy to answer your questions.

Remember we've all been Novice parents once too.
